Foods to avoid with braces
If you don't want the installation of braces to end in vain, it's important to pay attention to what foods you can consume every day. So that dental health is always maintained and the shape of the teeth that you desire after wearing braces is achieved, avoid consuming the following types of food.
1. Hard food
When it comes to hard textured foods, it's not just about munching on ice cubes. You should also reduce vegetables and fruits that make you spend extra energy when chewing them. If you want to eat it, cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces. Meanwhile for vegetables, you can cook them first.
2. Chewy and sticky food
Chewing gum, cotton candy, and boba should also be avoided when you've just put on your braces. The reason is, these three foods have a chewy and sticky texture that can easily get caught in wire gaps. In addition to damaging the braces, these foods will become a nest for the growth of oral bacteria if consumed continuously. The bacteria will then trigger various problems in the teeth and mouth.
3. Nuts and seeds
Foods that are too small, such as grains, are very easy to get stuck in the stirrup gaps. Once it's tucked in, you'll also have a hard time getting it out. In addition, some types of nuts such as almonds, dried corn, or flax seeds also have a hard texture. Instead, consume ground nuts or seeds.
4. Coarse fibrous food
Red meat has coarse fiber that makes your teeth have to work extra, especially if the meat you are processing is tough. In addition, coarse fibrous meat is also often stuck in the gaps of the braces. If the flesh gets stuck around the molars, the braces on the molars will also become loose. Therefore, be sure to cook the meat until
completely tender. That way, it will be easier for you to chew it. You can also choose alternative sources of protein such as fish and chicken.
Meal recommendations as above do not
necessarily become a limit for you to eat foods with a balanced nutritional pattern. As a solution, you can look for substitute foods that are no less healthy. That way, stirrup will not interfere with your nutritional intake.
You can also consult with your doctor regarding what foods can be consumed and need to be avoided after installing braces.
