how to treat periodontitis

Periodontitis is an infection of the gums that damages the teeth, soft tissue, and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontitis must be treated immediately because it can cause serious complications.

Periodontitis is also a complication of untreated gingivitis. If this condition occurs in the long term, the tissue around the gums and teeth will be damaged, causing tooth loss. In severe cases, periodontitis can cause abscesses or collections of pus to form in the teeth.

Other causes that increase the risk of periodontitis are smoking habits, obesity, malnutrition, drug abuse, hormonal changes during menstruation or pregnancy, and certain diseases (such as diabetes and leukemia).

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Periodontitis?

Periodontitis is divided into two, namely chronic periodontitis which affects adults and children, and aggressive periodontitis which usually appears in childhood or early adulthood. Symptoms usually include:

  1. The gums are swollen, bright red and painful to the touch.
  2. The height of the gums is reduced so that the  teeth appear longer than usual.
  3. There are cavities and pus between the teeth.
  4. Bad breath.
  5. Tooth date.

How is periodontitis treated and prevented?
Periodontitis treatment is carried out to clean the gaps that are formed and prevent damage to the bones by removing plaque and tartar on the teeth (such as scaling and root planning). Antibiotics are needed to control bacterial infections and prevent the spread of bacteria to the bone.

In severe cases, periodontitis needs to be treated with a surgical procedure. Among them are operations to reduce gum pockets or gaps, soft tissue grafts damaged by periodontitis, bone grafts to repair bones around the roots of teeth that have been destroyed, and removing teeth affected by periodontitis so it doesn't get worse and spread to other areas.

Apart from these treatments, periodontitis can be prevented in the following ways:
  1. Clean your teeth regularly at least twice a day, namely in the morning and at night before going to bed.
  2. Use a soft toothbrush and replace it every 3-4 months.
  3. Floss your teeth every day.
  4. Use mouthwash to reduce plaque on teeth.

Routinely go to the dentist at least once every 6 months. That's a way to deal with periodontitis that you can try.
