THE RELATIONSHIP OF DENTAL AND ORAL HEALTH
TO OVERALL HEALTH
Poor dental and oral health can give rise to various
complications of harmful diseases. In other words, the teeth and mouth need to
take precedence over their maintenance.
The oral cavity is one of the entrances of
disease-causing bacteria to other parts of the body. Bacteria in the oral
cavity can get into other organs and cause disease.
If your oral health is optimal, there are only a few
bacteria that can enter the body and do not harm the body.
However, if the mouth and teeth are not in a clean and
healthy condition, the number of bacteria that will enter the bloodstream can
increase two to ten times.
Some other diseases that can occur as a result of poor
dental and oral health include the following.
·
Gum diseases
Although mild, gum disease can
worsen if not treated appropriately. Gum disease or periodontal disease can
lead to tooth loss, infection and other complications.
·
Inflammation of the inside of the heart
Also called endocarditis, this
disease arises due to the presence of bacteria in the mouth that are carried
away by the bloodstream through the bleeding gums.
By regularly brushing your teeth and flossing, the number
of bad bacteria in the mouth will remain under control. When you neglect to
clean your teeth, bacteria will grow and cause disease.
This is certainly bad for people with weakened immune
systems, such as people with diabetes or HIV/AIDS. These diseases can inhibit
the body's resistance to fighting infections so that problems in the teeth and
mouth get worse.
