*Definition
Yellow teeth or also called tooth discoloration is one of the dental and mouth problems that many people often complain about . This is caused by a lack of brushing your teeth and the habit of consuming caffeinated drinks such as coffee , tea and excessive consumption of betel nut.
Tooth discoloration is divided into two categories based on the cause, namely intrinsic and extrinsic discoloration . intrinsic discoloration is a deeper discoloration of the tooth structure that can be affected by aging, use of tetracycline drugs, non- vital teeth, or dental caries. whereas extrinsic discoloration is a discoloration that is caused by staining due to the color of the food and drink consumed.
* Yellow teeth signs and symptoms
The signs and symptoms of yellow teeth are very easy to observe , namely the discoloration of the teeth and the color of the teeth, which tends to be dark yellow to blackish brown. this affects mouth disorders or caries, such as bad breath or caries. There are several factors that cause yellow teeth , including:
Rarely brush your teeth will cause a buildup of dental plaque which is the root of the problem with your teeth. If you rarely brush your teeth or floss your teeth , you will see more yellow teeth.
all circles of society certainly like to drink coffee , tea , and drink that contain caffeine . on the other hand , if you frequently consume caffeinated drink it will interfere with dental health which can cause yellow teeth . the high caffeine content in coffee and tea will slowly erode the enamel on the teeth besides that caffeine has acidic properties so prolonged exposure to acids can damage teeth and cause teeth to change color.
brushing teeth too hard can damage the enamel layer so that it will expose the yellow layer of dentin. smoking is a habit for all people, it can cause yellow teeth because cigarettes contain tar and nicotine. this effect can last for a short time especially for people who are heavy smokers, this can even have brown and even black teeth after years of smoking. The results of the study showed that 28% of smokers experienced discoloration of their teeth up to 15% faster than non- smokers.
Mouthwash is indeed very effective in cleaning teeth and areas of the oral cavity that toothpaste might not be able to reach. Unfortunately, many mouthwashes that are sold in the market have very high acid levels, so if you use mouthwash frequently , especially in large quantities , your mouth will become dry and eventually damage tooth enamel. As we age, the layer of enamel that protects teeth slowly erodes and fades. As a result, a layer of yellowish dentin will be exposed. The yellow color can get darker if you have a number of other dental problems, such as caries, cavities, and so on. Without realizing it, the medicines you take daily can also cause your teeth to change color. Some of the medications that most commonly cause discolored teeth : include Tetracycline and doxycyline antibiotics Glibenclamide , Chlorhexidine mouthwash Certain antihistamines Antipsychotic medication Medication for high blood pressure.
