Tartar is a layer like dirt that hardens on the teeth. Tartar is difficult to remove even though it has been cleaned or brushed repeatedly. Therefore, the treatment can only be done by a dentist.

Tartar generally does not cause symptoms and complaints that interfere with the health or function of the teeth themselves. However, untreated tartar can cause problems with teeth and gums, such as gingivitis or inflammation of the gums.

Tartar is formed due to the accumulation of plaque on the teeth that has not been cleaned for a long time. Plaque is a thin layer on the teeth that is formed from leftover food left in the mouth. There are various causes of tartar, including:

1. Dental and oral hygiene that is not maintained due to rarely brushing your teeth or not flossing your teeth

2. Consumption of foods or drinks that contain lots of sugar, such as candy, milk, packaged drinks, and cakes

3. Habits of smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages

4. Dry mouth caused by side effects of antidepressants, antihistamines, chemotherapy, and Sjögren's syndrome.

The bacteria present in tartar have the risk of causing irritation to the gums and teeth. Over time, irritation can lead to gum inflammation or gingivitis.

If not treated immediately, gingivitis can get worse and cause periodontitis, which is gum disease that can cause tooth loss and damage to the bones and tissues around the teeth. Untreated periodontitis can also increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The method commonly used to treat tartar is tooth scaling or cleaning teeth to the fullest. Teeth scaling is usually accompanied by root planing to clean the canals.

Basically, tartar must be cleaned immediately, even if it's only a little and doesn't cause complaints. This is to prevent complications of dental and oral diseases.

Ways to deal with tartar can also be done at home by:

1. Routine brushing teeth

2. Brush your teeth with the right technique

3. Using baking soda

4. Using mouthwash

5. Quit smoking

6. Drink lots of water
