Generally, bad breath arises because of food residue, bacteria, and dirt in the mouth. Leftover food that is in the mouth for too long will be destroyed by bacteria, causing an unpleasant odor. Another cause is poor dental health. Cavities and gum problems are often the cause of bleeding from the gums, causing bad breath.
Causes of bad breath
Here are some health problems for the mouth, teeth and gums that generally cause bad breath to occur:

1. Sinusitis

Many sinusitis sufferers do not realize that sinusitis causes bad breath when talking to other people. Why? Because sinusitis produces thick, smelly mucus that flows from the sinus cavity to the throat. Worse, when sinusitis attacks, sufferers cannot smell properly, so they often miss detecting whether they have bad breath or not. Sinusitis itself is actually a form of inflammation of the sinus walls. This is common and usually includes people of all ages. The main cause is usually the flu virus causing the infection. Apart from the flu virus infection, other causes include fungal bacteria, tooth infections, or regular smoking activities. Sinusitis can also be transmitted through direct or indirect contact. Usually, children are easily infected this way.

2. Xerostomia

Xerostomia or dry mouth is a condition of health problems that sometimes occurs due to forgotten little things. One of the causes of dry mouth is a lack of saliva in the mouth. If you are sick, you are usually more likely to have xerostomia than when you are healthy. Other causes are dehydration, taking medication, or having a cold. During a cold, a person is forced to breathe through the mouth, so that the saliva dries up and xerostomia occurs.Dry mouth due to the absence of saliva clearly makes the mouth emit an unpleasant odor. Saliva in the mouth plays a role in killing excess bacteria so that it doesn't emit an unpleasant odor. Well, if the mouth is dry and does not contain saliva, then the development of bacteria in the mouth becomes uncontrollable and causes bad breath.

3. Digestive Tract Disorders

Another more serious cause that causes bad breath is digestive tract disorders. The most common digestive disorders are ulcers and acid reflux disease or GERD. When you have stomach acid, the lower esophageal muscle circle usually doesn't function properly. This causes stomach acid to come out of the stomach and back up into the esophagus, even to the mouth. Well, acid that rises to the mouth and remains in the mouth will cause a very disturbing unpleasant odor. Considering that stomach acid is a medical condition that often occurs in Indonesian society, you should be vigilant. Reducing fatty foods and spicy foods is one way to avoid stomach acid. Thus, you can avoid the appearance of bad breath due to stomach acid.

Causes of bad breath in general

Halitosis or bad breath is caused by bacteria that grow and multiply in the mouth. As a result, when you open your mouth or exhale through your mouth, an unpleasant odor comes out. There are many things that can trigger or exacerbate bad breath. Here are some common things that cause bad breath :

1. Dry mouth

Bad breath caused by dry mouth occurs due to lack of saliva production in the mouth. Saliva which is also known as saliva has a function to clean the mouth naturally. Lack of saliva production is also more common after you sleep. During the day, your mouth produces large amounts of saliva. But when you sleep, saliva production decreases. If your mouth is dry, bacteria and germs will nest comfortably in your mouth. It is these bacteria and germs that cause bad odors. Dry mouth is usually triggered by dehydration, side effects of medications you are currently taking, or if you have recently had radiotherapy around your neck and head.

2. Sleeping with open mouth and snoring
If you snore or sleep with your mouth open and breathe through your mouth then you are more likely to have bad breath in the morning than one who doesn't. Both of these situations make the mouth more prone to dryness so that bacteria grow more. When the production of saliva in the mouth is reduced, the ability of the mouth to fight the bacteria that cause bad breath is also reduced.
