Moreover, these conditions are classified according to their abnormalities in terms of number, shape, color, structure, texture, eruption, and position.
1. Gemination
Gemination occurs when a developing tooth bud splits into two due to incomplete separation.
This condition shows the crown of a tooth that appears to be split but has only one root.
Generally, this disorder can occur in baby teeth and permanent teeth. Restorative treatments are usually necessary for both aesthetic and functional purposes.
Here are various types of tooth deformities that you need to know
2. Fusion
Another dental deformity is fusion. Fusion occurs when two tooth buds develop into one large tooth with two fixed roots.
This results from merging during the formation of teeth, so that the crowns of the teeth appear to be together.
Generally this condition occurs in the anterior region. The fused crowns appear much larger than usual. However, there is sometimes a gap that marks the two separate crowns.
In this disorder no treatment is needed. However, restorative treatments may be performed for aesthetic purposes.
3. Amelogenesis Imperfecta
This is a genetic disorder in the formation of enamel that causes changes in the morphology of the enamel.
The affected enamel will experience a decreased resistance to decay, so the teeth will appear yellowish brown.
The crown is square with several open contacts. This will affect both primary and permanent teeth equally. Restorative treatments are usually necessary for both aesthetic and functional purposes.
4. Taurodontism
One form of dental abnormalities is taurodontism. In this condition, the tooth is multi-rooted with a long body and a shortened pulp chamber and root.
Generally these abnormalities are not apparent in clinical appearance, and can be seen only by radiographic examination or after extraction.
This condition is most common in the mandibular molars among individuals with Down syndrome.
Special treatment is not required for taurodontism. However, special care is needed during root canal treatment or extraction.
