What is tooth abrasion?
Tooth abrasion is the loss of tooth structure due to abnormal mechanical wear. Where there is a layer of teeth that is missing and eroded enamel, or sometimes a deeper layer of tooth enamel, namely dentin. Tooth abrasion can be said to be the result of excessive and continuous friction on the teeth.
Cause of tooth abrasion
- Brushing your teeth too hard and the wrong way.
- Clasps (wires) on dentures that put too much pressure on the teeth.
- Bruxism (grinding of teeth).
- The habit of biting the smoking pipe between the upper and lower front teeth.
Symptoms of tooth abrasion
- Teeth hurt and more sensitive
- Tooth shape looks eroded
Prevents tooth abrasion
- Do not brush your teeth too hard and apply pressure. Use light pressure and precise brushing motions.
- Use a toothbrush with soft to medium bristles, with a small toothbrush head.
- Be careful when brushing the canines and small teeth, because these two teeth are in the corners of the mouth. you usually accidentally over-clean this area, which can cause tooth abrasion.
- Avoid toothpaste that contains lots of abrasive ingredients, such as whitening toothpaste.
- Avoid using toothpicks, preferably using dental floss.
